Alexandra Stapley portrays student Taylor Wedell and Laura DeCarteret plays her mother, while Nicole Crimi portrays Regina’s younger sister Kylie and Dan Willmott appears as her father. Sharron Matthews portrays Mr. Duvall’s secretary Joan and Clare Preuss plays Marymount Prep student Caroline Krafft. Regina distributes photocopies of the book throughout the hallways, inciting chaos. Principal Duvall and math teacher Ms. Norbury gather the female junior students in the gym to talk through their social issues. When Janis reveals her plan to destroy Regina to the students’ cheers, Regina storms out and is struck by a school bus, which fractures her spine. Drunk, she admits to Aaron that she doesn’t really need math tutoring, and he renounces her as being no better than Regina.

As senior year begins, the Plastics have disbanded; Regina joins the lacrosse team to channel her anger, Gretchen joins an Asian clique, and Karen becomes the school weather girl. After violating the Plastics’ dress code rules by wearing sweatpants, the only thing that fit her, Regina is banished and Cady becomes the new “queen bee”. Despite Janis’ insistence that Regina is “evil,” Cady comes to enjoy hanging out with the group at the mall and writing insulting remarks about their classmates and teachers in a diary called the “Burn Book”.

The new version of the Mean Girls story proved to be so beloved that it only took a few years for Hollywood to decide that a musical remake movie was needed next. The very nature of a musical remake meant adding several song and dance sequences to retell the story in a fresh way. Additionally, Lindsay Lohan, who played Cady Heron in the 2004 film, makes a cameo as the moderator of the Mathletes tournament, while Jon Hamm plays Coach Carr, the school’s physical education teacher. Ashley Park, who originated the role of Gretchen in the stage musical, appears as Madame Park, the school French teacher. Megan Thee Stallion appears as herself during the social media montages in the film. In the same montage, Jazz Jennings has a cameo as a Social Media Friend.

Regina discovers Cady’s crush on Aaron and, in a fit of jealousy, flirts with Aaron before kissing him in front of Cady. Realizing Janis was right about Regina, she agrees to commit to her plan to ruin her reputation. The movie follows Janis as she sings about being herself rather than pretending to be someone else and interacting with different classmates, only for it to end with Regina being hit by a bus. “Kevin G Rap” by Mahi Alam & Ensemble – The talent show provides another Mean Girls song not on the soundtrack thanks to Kevin G. He performs the same rap featured in the original 2004 movie until Principal Duvall stops him for being inappropriate. “What’s Wrong With Me?” by Bebe Wood – Gretchen gets a solo song in Mean Girls once she and the rest of the Plastics go to Regina’s house. She finds an old music box that she gave to Regina in her closet and immediately breaks into song.

The Plastics and Cady retire to Regina’s house, where they meet her “cool mom” and Gretchen and Karen show Cady their old Burn Book, where they put photos of their classmates and write mean comments about them. When they come across Janis’ photo in the book, Gretchen explains that she and Regina used to be best friends. Regina claims Janis freaked out when she was unable to invite her to her thirteenth birthday party and ended up in art therapy.

Concurrently, Gretchen contemplates being friends with Cady (“What’s Wrong With Me?” (reprise)). While the more poppy arrangement of the song in the movie leaves me wanting, Reneé Rapp delivers vocals and shows just why there was really no one else who could’ve taken on the role in this new film. Cady tricks Regina into eating weight-gain Kälteen Bars to lose weight and replaces her face cream with lard. The trio target Gretchen’s insecurities by having a Candy Cane-Gram sent to Cady on Regina’s behalf, making Gretchen believe Regina has replaced her as her best friend. Gretchen reveals Regina’s secrets to Cady, including her cheating on Aaron with football player Shane Oman. Regina’s reputation takes a further hit after a disastrous performance at the Winter Talent Show leads to viral embarrassment.

It partially gets made out of necessity and it’s partly fueled by delusion. My last name, Vandanapu, is very long, and more often than not, people wouldn’t bother remembering both names. And I felt like my first name is unique enough to stand out on its own.

As I grow older, I’ve lost my sense of deep fomo and deep anxiety regarding the notion of cliques. The concept of cliques and the concept of boxing six or seven people into this thing, where you’re only allowed to be interested in these things and talk about these things, is not healthy. I don’t know why I or any kid aspires so much to be a part of something like that, but my hope and dream is that people watch this movie and understand that there is a way beyond that. I graduated when I was really, really young, and then I ended up doing high school again and was on and off with the days that I actually came into school and had my attendance marked. So I definitely didn’t interact with that kind of a dynamic, but I had my fair share of cliquey experiences in middle school, which still account as truly the worst years of my life.
